Meet Matthew Talley
Why my experience matters to your business
When a business needs a lawyer, the question usually isn't, “Who knows the most law?” It’s, “Who understands what we’re trying to accomplish, and can help us get there without creating problems we don’t need?”
That is the perspective I bring through Logios Legal.
For 15 years, I worked as in-house counsel at two very different organizations: IBM and Deloitte. I wasn't sitting on the sidelines reviewing documents after the important business decisions had already been made. I was in the middle of those decisions, working alongside executives, sales teams, finance professionals, technologists, consultants, and outside lawyers to get complex deals done.
At IBM, I was part of the Global Services Complex Transaction Team, where I led negotiations for technology and business services agreements from the initial RFP through execution. Those transactions included business process outsourcing, consulting, infrastructure, application management, and application development—and many full-scope outsourcing engagements reached hundreds of millions of dollars in value.
At Deloitte, I served as Assistant General Counsel for Engagements, advising on complex client engagements and the negotiation and structuring of services agreements in support of critical business objectives. My role combined legal strategy, commercial risk management, and practical counsel on sensitive, high-stakes business matters.
That experience taught me something that is easy to miss when legal advice is viewed in isolation: The best legal answer isn't the most cautious answer. It's the answer that appropriately manages risk while helping the business accomplish what it needs to accomplish.
I understand what happens on the other side of the table
I've negotiated with sophisticated customers, vendors, consultants, advisors, and some of the world's largest law firms. I've worked closely with commercial, finance, and solution teams to turn complicated proposals into agreements that lay the groundwork for success.
I've also seen what happens after the signature.
Contracts don't end when they are signed. Issues arise. Expectations diverge. Circumstances change. A provision that seemed straightforward during negotiations can become very important six months later.
I've provided legal support when conflicts arose, advised on issues involving licensing, export, employment, confidentiality, publicity risks, rapidly changing regulations, and disputes, and helped teams think through data privacy, risk, compliance, and contracting.
That gives me a perspective I believe is particularly valuable to a growing or established business: I don't just think about whether a contract is legally acceptable. I think about whether it makes sense for the business that has to live with it.
Why a solo practice?
After spending my career inside large organizations, I deliberately chose a different model.
Logios Legal is small by design. When you work with me, you're not handed off from a partner to an associate to someone else who must get up to speed. You work directly with the lawyer responsible for understanding your situation and helping you solve it.
That makes it possible for me to provide the kind of focused, practical counsel that businesses often need but don't always get from a traditional law firm.
Sometimes that means negotiating an important agreement. Sometimes it means reviewing a contract before you sign it. Sometimes it means helping you think through a difficult business decision, responding when something has gone wrong, or simply giving you a clear view of the risks and options in front of you.
My goal is not to make your business more complicated. It's to help you move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
A little about me
My career has taken me a long way from where it started - literally.
I was born in England to parents serving in the United States Air Force. Growing up, I lived in Idaho, Guam, South Dakota, Illinois, Hawaii, Michigan, and Connecticut before eventually settling in North Carolina with my spouse and our two cats.
I've always enjoyed seeing how other people and places work. I studied abroad in Bangkok, Thailand, and still enjoy international travel. Outside of work, you'll usually find me going to shows, spending time in nature, or playing board games that are probably far more complicated than they need to be.
I think those experiences have shaped how I approach my work, too. I'm naturally curious, I like figuring out how things work, and I enjoy meeting people whose businesses and challenges are different from my own.
Most importantly, I know that behind every contract, transaction, dispute, or business decision is a person trying to build something.
That's why I started Logios Legal: to bring the experience I gained working on complex matters for major organizations to businesses that want sophisticated legal thinking without losing the personal relationship that comes with working directly with their lawyer.
I would be glad to learn about what you're building and see whether I can help.
